Most Transfers Are Free
On MTS buses:
"Smarter" Fareboxes On San Diego Transit Buses:
"Smart" fareboxes have been installed on all San Diego Transit buses. The farebox will electronically
issue magnetically encoded transfers and automatically read the transfers.
Using the electronic transfers is easy. Just tell the driver when you board that you need a transfer -- if you're
a Senior/Disabled rider or are paying multiple fares, be sure and tell the driver that right away. The farebox
will print out a transfer for you with the date and time that it expires (two hours from the time of boarding).
When transferring to a bus with a "smart" farebox, insert the electronic transfer into the slot on top
of the farebox; the farebox will "read" the transfer, let you know if it's still valid, and return it
to you. Remember, on a bus with a "Smart" farebox, your transfer is good for two hours from the time
you board.
When transferring to a bus with an older model farebox (on Chula Vista, National City Transit, and most MTS 800
& 900 Series Routes), show the electronic transfer to the driver who will make sure it's still valid. Transfers
issued on buses with an older model farebox continue to be valid for 90 minutes from the last timepoint. If you
begin your trip on a bus with an older farebox, you'll get a traditional transfer; when you transfer to a bus with
a "smart" farebox, just show that to the driver who will make sure it's still valid.
When your trip involves transferring from one route to another that has a higher fare, please pay the regular fare
on the first route and get your transfer. On the second route, put your tranfer into the farebox and pay the upgraded
fare. The farebox will return your transfer with the new fare on it.
Whenever you use a basic adult Regional Month Pass ($60.00) to ride an express bus, you must pay your fare upgrade
in cash. There will be no transfer issued with the fare upgrade on a monthly pass.
Standard Fareboxes On All Other MTS Buses:
When you board the bus, just ask the first bus driver for a transfer, and hand it to the driver of the second bus
when you get on it. If you need the transfer for a third bus, tell the driver and he'll return it to you. (You
may transfer through more than 3 buses, if necessary -- until the transfer expires.) If you started your trip on
the Trolley, save your ticket and use it like a transfer if you need to board a bus.
When your trip involves transferring from one route to antoher that has a higher fare, please pay the regular fare
on the first route and get your transfer from the driver. On the second route, show the driver your transfer and
put the fare upgrade into the farebox. The driver will repunch your transfer with the new fare and return it to
you.
You can use the transfer anytime within 90 minutes after the bus is scheduled to arrive at the end of the line.
Get a transfer from a bus and you'll get a free trip back within t he time limit. It's perfect for business lunches,
quick errands like going to the bank, the drug store or even visiting a friend.
A Trolley Ticket Is Your Transfer:
For the Trolley, your validated ticket is also your transfer -- it's good for two hours from the time of validation.
A one-way trolley ticket is valid for a bus transfer within 2 hours of validation. A round-trip trolley ticket
is valid for a bus transfer within 2 hours of validation and may be retained for the return trip on the trolley.
If you're transferring to a Bus or Trolley with a higher fare, you'll have to pay the difference when you board
the second vehicle. For example, if you're transferring from a Local Bus to an Express Bus or the Trolley, there
may be a higher fare. You can pay the difference at the Trolley ticket vending machine or when you board the second
bus.
And if you're riding with a monthly pass, just show your pass. No need to ask for or use a transfer. However, you
may need to pay an upgrade fare if your pass is for a ower priced service.
On NCTD buses (#101 and 302-450)
NCTD 1 Day Pass
Passengers pay either the single cash fare for $2.00 (Senior/Disabled/Medicare Recipient $1.00); or purchase the
1 Day Pass for $4.00 (Senior/Disabled/Medicare Recipient $2.00), good for unlimited riding on the day of purchase
on NCTD BREEZE and FAST services until the end of the service day. The 1 Day Pass is good for up to a $2.25 fare
on connecting MTS routes. The transfer must be made within two hours of when the pass was issued. A $.25 cash upgrade
is required when transfering to a SDT Express bus. For more information visit www.gonctd.com.
Electronic transfers will continue to be issued to customers on routes connecting with MTS buses. MTS will honor
the transfer for full fare on all $1.75 and $2.25 routes (Local and Urban) without upgrade; a $0.25 upgrade must
be paid on $2.50 routes (Express).
Note: Senior/Disabled/Medicare Recipient customers are not required to pay an upgrade when transferring to any
MTS service.
Where To Pay Your Fare
On the Bus, cash and tokens go into the farebox at the time you board. If you are riding with a Day Tripper or
Monthly Pass, just show it to the driver when you board.
If you're paying cash to ride the Trolley, use the ticket vending machine before you board. Press the button for
your correct fare, put your cash into the vending machine, and you'll be issued a ticket for proof of fare payment.
Do NOT board the Trolley without a valid ticket or pass. You may be cited by a code compliance officer, resulting
in a fine.

Tips On Using The Bus And Trolley
Buses Go Places By Route Numbers
If you know which route you want to take, check the route map to find which streets the Bus travels. Local routes
have stops almost every other block; express route stops are farther apart.
If you don't know which route you need to take, try the section called "Areas Served"
Buses Will Stop For You
If you're waiting at a Bus stop, stand facing the Bus and signal the driver that you'd like him to stop.
When you're on the Bus and you want to get off, pull the cord or press the strip above the window the block before
the Bus approaches your stop. Please exit from the rear doors of the Bus to leave room for people who are getting
on.
If you aren't sure where your stop is, ask the driver to call it out. Our drivers will do their best to help.
Trolleys Have Regular Stops
Trolleys operate along two routes. The Blue Line starts near Qualcomm Stadium and runs through Mission/Fashion
Valley, Old Town, and Centre City San Diego to the International Border at San Ysidro. The Orange Line runs from
Centre City east to El Cajon or Santee. The East line also serves stations on the Bayside extension, at Seaport
Village, the San Diego Convention Center, and Gaslamp Quarter.
Buses And Trolleys Are Made For Sitting And Standing
If seats are available, please make yourself comfortable. If all the seats are occupied, ove back away from the
doors. There are poles throughout for you to hold on to. And if you're riding with small children, please hold
them securely.
The seats at the front of every Bus are priority seating for seniors and disabled riders. On the Trolley, the seats
near every door are priority seating for seniors and disabled riders. Please be courteous.
